ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ACTIONS

SBIT Pulling Together for Wellness developed an action plan - established the goal: Changing the Norm

Challenge Statement: Improve the health of Shoalwater Bay Tribal members for seven generations by embracing the healthy traditions of our ancestors. “Change the Norm”

Addressed Commercial Tobacco, Marijuana, Healthy and Traditional Foods (Food Sovereignty), Physical Activity (walking paths), etc.

  • Developed and conducted a Shoalwater Water Bay Tribe Community Health Assessment, multiple environmental scans with youth, leaders, and community
  • Developed and conducted a Shoalwater Water Bay Tribe Community Health Assessment, multiple environmental scans with youth, leaders, and community
  • Multiple tribal community surveys re: commercial tobacco policy and presentations(both SBT PTW and youth levels)
  • Youth conducted community health assessment survey (trained youth representatives) door-to-door
  • Youth presented survey findings at a community dinner - full house

Commercial Tobacco/Substance Abuse

  • Raising the legal age to purchase tobacco and vapor products to 21
  • Raising the legal age to purchase tobacco and vapor products to 21
  • Youth developed the Tobacco 21 resolution for raising the age to purchase tobacco and presented to Tribal Council
    • Youth conducted an environment scan to identify where people smoke and signage
    • Community education articles in newsletter
    • 2 community surveys – implemented

Physical Activity

  • Establish a complete streets ordinance:
    • Complete Streets Resolution
    • Plant list created to preserve traditional plants to our area by incorporating them into new development or redevelopment projects

Healthy Eating

  • Establish native foods ordinance
    • Food Sovereignty Resolution
    • Creation of nutrition guidelines for Elder meals and community events
    • Promoted and supported breastfeeding through the newsletter
    • Garden progress
    • Ranch plan developed (requested but did not receive 1st Nations grant)
