Summary

Serves Tribal Council and Government in building and maintaining relationships with the general public and the media through numerous methods of communication.

Works to positively to enhance the image of the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe through directing the development and maintenance of a monthly newsletter, webpage, social media platforms, photos, messaging, media and press releases, building and maintaining relationships with the general public and media on behalf of the Tribe through media platforms, website, and face to face interactions, as well as working closely with Council and Tribal Government to ensure consistent and unified statements and positions when necessary to the community and surrounding areas.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following, other duties may be assigned.

  • Create monthly newsletter containing SBIT information by 15th of each month;
  • Researching, interviewing, writing submissions;
  • Edit submissions;
  • Proofread to ensure correct spelling, punctuation and phasing;
  • Distribute monthly newsletter;
  • Reminders to staff about deadlines for submission;
  • Distributes flyers and brochures received from programs intended for public distribution of the Tribe’s media resources;
  • Represent employer during community projects and at public, social, governmental and business gatherings;
  • Attend Council Meetings, Board Meetings and any other meetings as requested;
  • Monitor and update the website including community announcements and employee directory;
  • Managing and updating information through the use of social media;
  • Assist Tribal Council, Administration with meaningful communication and dialogue with media/news outlets;
  • Perform duties of Tribal Liaison between Tribal Council/Government and other entities when required;
  • Arranges and manages consistent communication with outlets to establish and maintain contact between the Tribe and the public;
  • Remain up to date regarding Tribal affairs, current projects, programs, etc., for the purpose of distributing factual/proper information;
  • Oversee the photography and video production for Tribe’s events, ensuring media content is captured
  • Archives and maintains a catalogue of photos for the Tribe for events, meetings, gatherings, etc.
  • Share the Tribes story developing content that highlights the Tribal community
  • Ensure the Tribe’s history, culture, and future vision are communicated accurately and clearly.
  • Design simple, impactful graphics and infographics to amplify milestones and important updates

Qualifications

  • Excellent command of the English language and solid editing, grammar and punctuation skills and must demonstrate a keen attention to detail.
  • Expertise in social media management, digital marketing, and content creation strategies
  • Experience with Flipbook, Photo shop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign
  • Must be available for Tribal events, meetings, and gatherings when requested to attend.
  • Research is required as well as fact-checking
  • Must be a team player who can also work independently to produce high volume and meet deadlines.
  • High integrity, professionalism, and ability to handle sensitive and controversial issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including Tribal members, leadership, staff, and external organizations.

Experience and Eduction

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); BA degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field preferred; 3–5-year related experience and/or training in public relations, media, photography, and communications; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.  Experience working with Tribal leadership or within Tribal communities preferred.

 

Skills

COMPUTER SKILLS:  Excellent computer skills including publishing, word processing, spreadsheets and email programs.  Willingness to learn necessary computer software as needed.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
