Summary

Under direct supervision, assists providers and clinicians with patient care duties in a medical environment.  Maintains efficient patient flow, assists with patient care.  Performs miscellaneous clinic support tasks.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following, other duties may be assigned.

  • Escorts patients to and from exam rooms, provider offices and treatment rooms as appropriate.
  • Records patient data into electronic medical records system, prior to each provider visit, including, but not limited to vital signs, height, weight, allergies, reason for visit/current complaint, and current medications being taken including OTC and supplements.
  • Obtains all necessary patient records as required by provider and verifies presence of consent prior to treatment or procedures.
  • Prepares and stocks exam/treatment rooms and orders supplies as needed.
    • Daily immunization freezer/refrigerator log.
    • Sharps containers weekly.
    • Stock room supplies weekly.
    • Check liquid nitrogen weekly.
    • Checks sample closet for expirations monthly.
    • Inventory/expirations on crash cart monthly.
    • Checks O2 tanks monthly.
  • Assists providers with exams and procedures as requested.
  • Administration of immunizations, and injections as directed by providers.
  • Assists with patient education activities including, but not limited to distributing education literature, etc.
  • Maintains all exam/treatment room disinfection protocols.
  • Processes/sterilize instruments and equipment as needed.
  • Answers patient telephone calls for referral to provider or nurse.
  • Schedules patient tests, procedures and hospital admissions and schedules appointments to follow-up on test results, as applicable.
  • Informs provider of patient reschedules and no shows.
  • Obtains new patient records and previous test results, x-rays, scans, etc.
  • Collect and prepare lab specimens, or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize medical instruments.
  • Draw blood and prepare lab specimens.
    • Back-up lab tech as necessary.
  • Removing sutures.
  • Changing dressings/wound care.
  • Perform all medical assistant duties in accordance with State regulations, while adhering to facility policy and procedures.
  • Immunization coordination with Washington Department of Health (D.O.H)
    • Responsible for logging in and expiration of all immunizations.
    • Coordination of immunizations during a Public Health outbreak.
  • Referral coordination back-up as necessary.
  • Prior medication authorization back-up as necessary.
  • Prescription Monitoring Program for providers through D.O.H back-up as necessary.
  • Prescription refill via electronic records, telephone and/or fax.
  • Observes strict patient confidentiality, and all pertinent requirements of HIPAA and any other confidentiality regulations.
  • Performs other supportive duties, i.e. letter writing, filing, faxing, reception, etc., as requested by supervisor or provider.
  • Maintains current, active, valid, unrestricted Washington State licensure and CEU’s as necessary.
  • Maintains current CPR certification.
  • Participates in the Tribe’s quality improvement and medical planning activities as necessary.
  • Works cooperatively with the Providers, Health Director, and medical staff personnel or department.
  • Observes strict patient confidentiality, and all pertinent requirements of HIPAA and any other confidentiality regulations.
  • Performs any additional reasonable roles and responsibilities as determined necessary by the Health Director.

    Safety:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of CDC, Dept. of Health, OSHA standard as it applies to the clinic environment.

  • Adheres to universal precautions.

  • Duties as assigned during emergencies/disasters.

Qualifications

Experience and Eduction

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one year to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants preferred. Phlebotomy experience preferred.  Lab experience preferred. Health Care Assistant training required.

Skills

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating instructions, building blueprints, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Current valid, unrestricted Health Care Assistant license to practice within Washington State.  Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
