Summary

This position is responsible for the co-ordination, planning, development and administering projects related to the areas of heritage and culture.  Will coordinate Cultural and heritage activities, such as the annual Cultural Fair, cultural classes – youth and adult, and lineage reconstruction and documentation by performing the following duties.  As well as overseeing all cultural permitting and cultural consultation requests both internal and with outside agencies.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following, other duties may be assigned.

  • Year-round planning for tribal cultural events.
  • Comprehensive documentation of Tribal heritage and customs through membership interviews, photos, and other items of cultural or generational significance.
  • Actively seek funding sources for future projects, working cooperatively with Grant Writer, Tribal Administrator and Education Department.
  • Assist with the Youth After School and Summer Youth Programs.
  • Assist with Cultural awareness education for employees.
  • Assist the Tribe in its involvement with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
  • Act as a Cultural Ambassador between the Tribe and any/all public and/or private entities which seek better cultural understanding of the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe.
  • Represent Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe at all cultural events.
  • Administer research and implementation of tribal language projects.
  • Administer research and implementation of tribal traditional foods and food access for tribal families.
  • Administer research and implementation of tribal arts and classes of the arts.

Supervisory Requirements

Oversees Cultural department personnel.

Qualifications

Experience and Eduction

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); minimum of 1-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive knowledge of Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe culture, history, and community background.

Skills

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

COMPUTER SKILLS: Comprehensive knowledge of computers (hardware and software) and computer networking.  Current knowledge of Microsoft XP Word and Excel software.
