Summary
The focus of the Biologist II position is a multi-disciplinary natural resource position. The Biologist II will be responsible for addressing water quality, monitoring wildlife populations including ESA listed species, removal of invasive species including European Green Crab, land resources and forest management issues on the Shoalwater Bay Indian Reservation lands. Performing field and office work associated with multi-disciplinary assessments of natural resources features, implementing natural resource projects, managing the Tribal lands to improve and protect natural resources. This position coordinates projects with other agencies, local and tribal governments, and contractors. Works to develop and maintain standard operating procedures for environmental compliance; obtains, interprets, and communicates environmental regulations to which the Tribe is subject. Strong technical skills in plant identification, vegetation management, and using GIS applications.
Job Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Reviews and comments on environmental documents including DNR Forest Practice Applications and State Environmental Policy Act/National Environmental Policy Act documents
- Oversee the management of terrestrial and forest habitats using heavy equipment, tractors, skid steers, ATVs, mowers, and power tools
- Monitor and treat invasive weeds and animals using chemical and mechanical methods
- Assist in data collection for ecological monitoring for plant and animal populations
- Environmental permitting/ monitoring/ investigations
- Assist with environmental, biological and wetland assessments
- Assist in writing grant proposals
- Lead annual report writing for habitat restoration projects
- Ability to develop and read maps in ArcGIS, utilize GPS instruments, aerial photos, and conduct self-orientation in the field utilizing various instruments and reference resources
- Familiarity with construction drawings and specifications related to biological issues, standard habitat impact minimization and protection techniques
- Ability to read and comprehend technical documents and specifications
- Safe operation of ATVs, trucks, boats, tractors, chainsaws, power tools, etc.
- Operate and use firearms, cutting torch, and welding equipment
- Must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment
- Must be able to work effectively in all weather conditions and in rough terrain
- Must be able to repetitively lift up to 50 lbs, must be in good physical condition with the ability to pack heavy objects over rough terrain and possibly in inclement weather conditions
- Must be able to complete repetitive tasks, such as spraying invasive species
- Must be able to sit or stand for considerable periods of time (hours)
- Other tasks as assigned
Supervisory Requirements

Experience and Eduction
BS degree with significant course work in natural resources, environmental science, biology, and/ or forestry with two years relevant experience; OR AAS/ AS with four additional years of related forestry, wildlife, fisheries or related natural resource field experience
Skills
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write reports at EPA standards and write field reports or HazMat tracking reports.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: College level that relates to the scientific reports required of this position.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
